Definition

In AC circuits, the power factor is the ratio of the real power that is used to do work and the apparent power that is supplied to the circuit.

The power factor can get values in the range from 0 to 1.

When all the power is reactive power with no real power (usually inductive load) – the power factor is 0.

When all the power is real power with no reactive power (resistive load) – the power factor is 1.

Formula

Formula used for Power Factor calculation is:

  1. Power Factor(N)[PF] = 1000 * Power(kw)[P] / (Voltage(V)[V] * Current(A)[I]) 
    Example:
    A circuit has 20A current flowing in it and a battery of voltage 500V is applied across it. If the Power in the circuit is 2 Watt, calculate power factor of the circuit?
    Sol. : 
    Pf = 1000 * P / (V * I)
    Pf = 1000 * 2(W) / (500(V) * 20(A))
    Pf = 2000 / 10000
    Pf = 0.2
  2. Power factor = kW/√ (kW)2  + (kVAr)2 
    where
    kW = Real Power
    kVAr = Reactive Power
    Example:
    Find the Power factor of circuit where real power is 180 and Reactive power is 30.
    Sol. : 
    Power factor (PF) = kW/√ (kW)2  + (kVAr)2
    PF = 180/√180*180 + 30*30
    PF = 180/√180*180 + 30*30
    PF = 180/√32400 + 900
    PF = 180/√33300
    PF = 0.9864
